Non-Surgical Therapy Instructions

  1. A small amount of blood may appear in your saliva for a few hours, this is normal.  However, if constant bleeding occurs or large blood clots are present, call the office
  2. Numbness can last approximately 2-4 hours after the procedure is finished.  Do not drink very hot liquid, bite your tongue, cheek or lips while numb
  3. Cold sensitivity may occur, use of a desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne is recommended
  4. If your gums are sore:
    • An over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Advil or Tylenol, may be taken.
    • Avoid spicy foods, peanuts, small seeds, popcorn and chew on the un-treated side of your mouth.
    • Rinse well with warm water or salt water after eating and rinse for one full minute with ½ strength mouth wash (mix equal parts water and mouth wash) in the morning and before bed. Use a soft or extra-soft manual toothbrush, gentle flossing and/or gentleproxy-brushing technique. If the treated area is still sore when you resume use of the electric brush, turn it off and use as a manual brush.
  5. Return to usual home care, diet and stop salt water rinses once your gums feel normal again. If you find that your gums are sore for more than two days, please call the office
