Scaling and Root Planing

The initial stage of treatment is usually a thorough cleaning that includes scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface and remove bacterial toxin allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. These treatments are often completed over a series of visits to maximize the patient’s comfort and insure a more thorough and meticulous completion of procedures.

After scaling when deep pockets persist it is difficult to know that we have controlled the periodontal disease. Patients can seldom, if ever, keep these deep pockets clean and free from harmful plaque. It may be necessary to repeat scaling and root planing procedures because of these deep pockets. Surgery may ultimately be needed to restore periodontal health and possibly regenerate bone or gum tissues around the teeth.
