Post-Operative Instructions

After Periodontal Surgery & Implant Surgery

  1. A periodontal dressing may have been applied to your teeth to protect the surgical area.  Do not become alarmed if small pieces break off; however, if the dressing becomes loose or dislodged in the first 24-48 hours, please call our office (410) 363-3780 at Wingsmills or (410) 931-1000 at White Marsh.
  2. Apply an ice pack to your face - ten minutes on, ten minutes off – over the four to six hour period following the surgery to help reduce/minimize swelling.
  3. Prescriptions you may have received should be filled by your pharmacist immediately and used as directed.
  4. Do not disturb the surgical area or sutures with your tongue or fingers. Do not stretch your lips or cheeks during rinsing or to look at the wound.
  5. A soft diet is advised for one week following surgery.  Examples - pasta (spaghetti, macaroni & cheese) mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup, yogurt, applesauce, puddings, oatmeal, cream of wheat. Nutrient formulas such as Instant Breakfast, Ensure, Sustical, Slim Fast, Boost are excellent supplements. Avoid hard, crunchy, hot, spicy foods and peanuts, pretzels, popcorn, raw vegetables, potato chips. Chew on the unaffected side of your mouth.
  6. Maintain oral cleanliness during the healing period by your usual daily hygiene measures in all unaffected parts of your mouth. In addition, to freshen the dressing after the first 24 hours, rinse well with warm water or salt water after each meal and rinse for one full minute with ½ strength mouth wash (mix equal parts water and mouth wash) in the morning and before bed.
  7. Some blood may appear in the saliva for a couple of days following surgery, this is normal.  However, if constant bleeding occurs or large blood clots are present, call the office.
